In Memoriam

a raw acoustic song written soon after the untimely death of my friend and early collaborator Ralph Simpson.

words and music by Martin Stirrup 2016

C Em
We’re born into confusion and sent upon our way
Dm F G
Some just grin and sally forth whilst others stop to pray
Em F C G
Either way we’re searching for a little clarity
C F C Am G
As to how we get from where we are to where we want to be

However much we’d like to think that we are in control
We’re all of us dependent on the way the dice will roll
We hope we’ll have fine weather and sail a pleasant sea
But storms can rise and hopes demise whoever we may be

F Fmaj7 G
That this applies to all of us is life’s one certainty
F Fmaj7 C G
We all are heading to the void on our own trajectory
Em F C G
But I still don’t know if I should go get drunk or sign the pledge
Am F G
When I hear another good friend’s just gone sailing off the edge

We know there’s a beginning so there must be an end
But what’s our span’s a question we can never comprehend
We hope to be forgiven we hope to make amends
We hope to live and die amongst our family and friends

So come all you saints and sinners, come all you bright young things
There’s much for you to do before it’s time to gain your wings
But don’t ever get complacent and don’t let your judgement sneer
Paths branch out before you and the ways are never clear.

That this applies to all of us is life’s one certainty
F Fmaj7 C G
We all are heading to the void on our own trajectory
Em F C G
But I still don’t know if I should go get drunk or sign the pledge
Am F C
When I hear another good friend’s just gone sailing off the edge
