Long Day

Written after a long dusty ride through Uttarakhand in the back of Mr Kumar's car - I often start with a simple, literal line and let it develop from there

words and music by Martin Stirrup 2018

It's been a long day
The road was slow and winding and the dust got in my eyes
I’ve come a long way
And as the miles were grinding past I came to realise
That things had slipped awry
Echoes die away
It's been a very long day

It's been a long day
I'll try to sleep through sorrow but I fear that sleep won't come
I know that I’ll pay
But there'll still be tomorrow and I'll try another run
Face towards the sun
In a different way
It's been a very long day

While there's life there's hope I must remember
Keep my spirits from decline
And though the choice was hers I can't condemn her
I could have stopped it all if I had seen the signs

It's been a long day
There may be more on the horizon if I let it get me down
So what would you say
Should I slip on a tie and hit a singles bar down town
Head back to the fray
Or drink the blues away
It's been a very long day
