Track 18: Silly Down the Dilly - An homage to Julian and Sandy, the outre camp characters from the Home Service's Rounde the Horne comedy show from the mid 60s. I was a bit young to fully understand it all but I loved the slang they used (Polari). Not quite sure how they got away with it at the time, as male homosexuality was still illegal. With a scrathy 78 record lead in!
To tell you all the truth
About my casually misspent youth
Would be far beyond anything I’d dare
But we’d troll up town to see
If we’d find bona company
Whilst keeping well below the searchlights
glare
We’d all sip at our Bacardi
And converse in hushed Polari
As we casually leaned against the bar
And If some omi came to ask it
We’d have a vada of his basket
And wonder if he’d care to go that far
‘course that was back in the day
When all bachelors were gay
And the way we lived was really rather
nice
And though our friends we might deplore
‘em
If they slipped in their decorum
I too was silly down the ‘Dilly once or
twice
Now I had a friend called Trevor
Who had family that never
Would believe that he would step beyond the
Pale
But though he came across as haughty
He could get a trifle naughty
If he let the demon alcohol prevail
And so one night I’m afraid
He went searching after trade
Down the cottage where he thought he’d have his
pick
But what he saw as mincing Tommy
Turned out as charpering omi
And he was whisked right off his lallies to the
nick
Now these days it seems absurd
That such a one should get the bird
For such an unassumimg little vice
And though I wouldn’t wish to stress
it
I’m afraid I must confess it
I too was silly down the ‘Dilly once or
twice
