Stranded by the Tide

This started as a very literal (and littoral!) piece written after a couple of days on Ngapali Beach in Myanmar... then it got all metaphorical. (Beach Life followed the next day.)

To get the right feel on the recording I asked Mary Davies to play the piano part 'with expression' (ie without a click track) and then added the guitar to that. It then got sent off to Jon Garvey in Devon for the addition of his magic saxophone break... very atmospheric (I think!)

(actually 3rd fret so Gm!)

Em6 Cmaj7 Em6
Stranded by the tide, washed up on some long-forgotten shore
Am7 Em6
I was Stranded by the tide, fading shadow of all I was before
Am7 C Cmaj9 G+5 Em
Till the waters of your love surrounded me, lifted me and set me free

It’s easy to get lost when the compass of your life falls apart
Easy to get tossed, bruised and battered in the matters of the heart
Sometimes you need that rescue line, to pull you from the brink of loss of sanity
Bm+5 Am7
What made you take that step, what made you say hello
Bm+5 Am7
What was it that you saw I didn’t think could show
Bm+5 Am7
What made you fall in love, there’s nothing I could see
Bm+5 Am
To raise me from the ranks of mediocrity

I was Stranded by the tide, flotsam from the chaos of the sea
Stranded by the tide, washed up by the swell of life’s sad vagaries
Till the waters of your love surrounded me, lifted me and set me free
