04 Roger’s song 1970

This tiltle is not to be misconstrued….here is it’s origin. By the end of second term I was playing regularly at the Cambridge University Folk club (St Laurence folk song society, as it was known) and would try to have one new song ready every week. Whizzo guitarist Roger Brawn was on the same corridor as me at Fitz and we’d often jam together and try songs out on each other. One day Roger cam to my room – he had a lyric for a song and he wanted me to put it to music. I sat down with my guitar and in half an hour or so came up with this tune and guitar arrangement. I invited Roger back in to listen, which he did politely… ‘Mmm, that’s nice… but I think I’ll write my own after all.’ So I then had to come up with a lyric of my own. It was a rainy early spring and I had recently cracked my head on a road sign whilst walking eyes down out of the rain….

I often played this song at the club as it worked ‘stand alone’ with it’s Cohen-style finger-picking so I didn’t want to impinge to much on the song when I arranged it for recording. I went for a scored cello line which I think adds to the feel.

Winter is waning raining and warm
Water cascading causing alarm
On the faces of the crowd as they go rushing by
With their eyes to the pavement and not to the sky

The pallid sun was clouded shrouded with rain
Thunder applauded lauded the game
And in the soft grey light the words you had to say
Formed an image on your lip and floated away.

Winter is waning raining and warm
Water cascading causing alarm
On the faces of the crowd as they go rushing by
With their eyes to their troubles away from you and I
