07 On losing a friend 1971
An interesting philosophical dialogue… (oh yes, things could get deep …) One of the few ‘strumming’ songs from this period (well, once you’ve learnt how to finger-pick you don’t like to downgrade to a plectrum, do you…) so I probably didn’t play it much at the time – but that very openness makes it more suitable for arrangement.
Early today she asked me whether
Time is the power that holds us together
I said if you mean is there something above us
And is there a power we can never discover
I told her she could be right but I don’t think we need to worry
She said that the days take so long to be leaving
And she can’t see the ways that her life-threads are weaving
And many’s the hour that she’s sat by her curtain
And watched them who pass, those whose vision is certain
I told her to use her sight and see that their eyes are empty
For the day is the reason for everything
And the light is there to see
And to live is the best thing that day can bring
There is nothing else to be
