13 Happy song 1969
I wrote this for Sheila when I was 17 and we’d been going out for a few months (all say aaah!). In 2005 we were at a dinner party at a friend’s house in Delhi; some CDs were playing random shuffle quietly in the background as we ate and chatted when I suddenly became aware that Paul Simon had just given way to this song… a very unreal moment.
She moves majestically ‘cross the room
Her cat’s eyes glistening through the gloom
Emotion flows that eyes can’t see
Around her as she slips across to me
Her hand advances through the smoke
Cleaving the emptiness with her subtle stroke
I can feel her touch me even before
I clasp her hand so tight in mine
And I know that she is mine
And I know that, yes I know that
Love will grow in time
Hypnotic movements enthrall my brain
Does she cry for happiness of for pain
Does she exist here in my arms
Or is my imagination running wild
The cloak of alcohol surrounds me
But it can’t conceal the truth that I can see
Others want her but they’ve no chance
I know that she will stay with me
And I know that she is mine
And I know that, yes I know that
Love will grow in time
