09 Backwaters

The main tune and lyric came more or less in its final form whilst spending a couple days relaxing on a converted rice boat on the backwaters of Kerala... the thrum of the engines, the rippling sound of the water, singing from a distant church.... The intro and break were added later to enhance the Indian feel, but the sitar is actually a balalaika

Through still waters of green, we slowly glide
Calm backwaters serene protected from the tide
There’s a dragonfly murmur droning in the air
There’s a languid haze of perfume everywhere

Like the coconut palms we gently sway
To your manifest charms I give myself away
To the rhythm of water sliding ‘neath the keel
We don’t need any words to say just how we feel
