09 No way to drive 1976

A very late ‘early period’ song – it was loose in my songbook, a few incomplete lines and a couple of chords scribbled on the back of a piece of card torn from a Vesta curry pack. It may therefore have originated on holiday somewhere or even predate that, from fieldwork on the Isle of Wight. So this was a modern build on ancient foundations…

Winters day passing by why so shy so sly
Look away to sky wonder why oh why
Driving down an icy road and I don’t seem to see to far
Firmly but politely told that’s no way to drive you car

Rolling fast breakneck speed where’s the need just greed
Saving time laying lines look for signs
Pass another bottle round but it don’t seem to go too far
Funny how I suddenly found I’m in no state to drive my car

Me I like to mix a little
fool around and sink a few
Funny how when you’re feeling brittle
Everybody wants to break on you
