14 words that you’re saying 1971 (70s overdubbed analogue recording)

This was one of the first songs Roger Brawn and I tried to record as its open structure lent itself to broader arrangement. It features Rogers lead guitar as well as my fold-up harmonium. Re the lyrics – the caravan in question was in a pig farm in Llangollen, where Sheila and I spent a happy month as I did my second year fieldwork project.

I hear the words that you’re saying floating through my head
I see the images playing but I float away instead
What do you do when I’m drifting away from the line
Tapping my foot in time as I play with a rhyme

My eyes are focussed upon you what is it that I see
A light that radiates from you a light that touches me
Lighting a distant way opening up the day
Guiding my thoughts so that they can take all that they may

Raindrops fall upon our caravan and windows trickle with the sky
Above it all there’s a mystic land refuge for the thoughts that fly
