sounds of sex and violence

A song for Darwin... Mostly written in the Amazon basin - Napo in Ecuador. A fantastic place on a black marble-mirrored lake. Very scary to swim in as you can't see what's under the surface.. and yes, I did later catch a Piranha in it... And I did brave the jungle at night - with a powerful torch and a local guide... actually the conga ants were probably the scariest things - 3 bites and you're dead apparently....

I’m lying here listening to sounds of sex’n’violence
If natures red in tooth and claw I guess it all makes perfect sense
I just caught a piranha – should I eat it for my tea
If I go swimming in the river I hope they won’t reciprocate on me

I’m lying in the jungle listening to sounds of clicks and shrieks and roars
You can bet your dugout paddle till the sun comes up I won’t be going out of doors
Someone saw an anaconda living further up the stream
You can bet it’s not in friendship if it hugs and squeezes you until you scream

But when the sun arises its a different melody

Plenty of surprises but in pleasing harmony

Hiding by disguise or stand out in cacophony

Happy till the darkness falls again.

I saw an orange spider bigger than the biggest dinner plate
I took a closer look but it sped off with its low-slung octagait
Now I don’t know where it’s hiding, maybe it’s underneath my bed
At least it won’t go hungry the cockroaches will keep it very well fed

Chorus again

I’m lying in the jungle listening to sounds of sex’n’violence
It may be nature’s way but if your eaten then it’s little recompense
But in the struggle for survival we’re the kings sure as can be
But if you put me out there naked, they’d quickly make a monkey out of me
